What Does a Chiropractor Do?
A Chiropractor uses many different types of treatments to help the body heal and to stay healthy. With the focus of aiding the body’s inherent recuperative powers to heal without the use of surgery or drugs. Chiropractic physicians diagnose, treat and prevent disorders of the neuromusculoskeletal system and the effects these disorders have on general health.
Where Do Chiropractors Provide Services?
Chiropractors are physician level healthcare providers licensed to practice in 50 states and more than 40 countries worldwide. Chiropractors perform their services in private offices, traditional medical clinics, hospitals, and integrated healthcare settings. Chiropractic physicians, or DC’s, currently treat patients at Veteran’s Administration hospitals, United States Military bases, Cancer Treatment Centers of America and the Mayo Clinic. Patients commonly seek chiropractic care for relief of low back pain, neck and shoulder pain, and headaches.
What Services Does a Chiropractor Provide?
Chiropractors manage neuromuscular conditions with a wide variety of techniques. Manual therapy treatments include spine and extremity joint adjustments, soft tissue therapy, such as active release or massage, and rehabilitation exercises. Physical therapy modalities may include therapeutic ultrasound, kinesiology taping, and electrical stimulation therapy as necessary. Many chiropractors also employ nutritional counseling, patient education and lifestyle modification as treatment options. These therapeutic options allow chiropractic physicians to treat a wide range of disorders and general health conditions safely and effectively. The profession does not prescribe drugs or perform surgery, and patients are referred for medical care if these interventions are required.
What Education is Required to Provide Chiropractic Services?
Doctors of Chiropractic Care (DC’s) must complete four years of education at a nationally accredited doctoral level graduate school program that consists of more than 4500 hours of classroom and clinic education. DC’s are well trained in diagnostic skills and often utilize physical examinations, lab reports, and diagnostic imaging to determine if a condition is appropriate for chiropractic care. Chiropractic physicians must pass multiple national board examinations during their educational training in order to obtain a license to practice. In addition, Chiropractors are required to obtain annual continuing education credits to maintain their license.
